About four miles up the river from Saugatuck is Mac’s Landing. The first white man here was James McCormick, who built a small house about one mile west of Fennville. James blazed a trail from his cabin to the river where he kept his boat, and this is the origin of the area known as Mac’s Landing.
Mac’s Landing Veterinary Services was formed in 1997 by Dr. Raymond Viele, and Dr. Kurt and Mrs. Lisa Kiessling. Mac’s Landing is a historical designation in regards to the area by the Kalamazoo River, which is just one mile to the north of the clinic. Originally, the practice occupied the back of the Kiesslings' home, but by June of 2002, the practice had grown to be so busy, it moved next door to its present location at 2716 62nd Street. Dr. Mahar joined the practice in 2008. On January 8, 2013, after a two year battle with cancer, Dr. Ray passed away. The entire staff are continuing on with Dr. Ray's legacy to serve Fennville, Saugatuck, Douglas, and the Lakeshore communities with clinical and ambulatory care of both large and small animals. It is our goal to continue to grow and gain respect for providing quality medicine in a country-style clinic.
